Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

The ultimate Himalayan pilgrimage, sacred to Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Bon followers alike.

Why It's Sacred

Mount Kailash, in Tibet, is revered as the abode of Lord Shiva and Parvati, while nearby Lake Mansarovar is considered the earthly manifestation of purity, said to have been created in the mind of Brahma. The yatra (pilgrimage) is one of the most physically demanding and spiritually significant journeys in Hindu tradition, also sacred to Tibetan Buddhists (as the abode of Demchok), Jains (associated with Rishabhadeva's liberation) and followers of the Bon religion.

Routes

Indian pilgrims traditionally travel via government-organised batches through the Lipulekh Pass (Uttarakhand) or the Nathu La Pass (Sikkim), both coordinated by India's Ministry of External Affairs (Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam handles Lipulekh logistics). An alternative is the Nepal route via the Rasuwagadhi/Kerung or Tatopani/Nyalam border crossings, and a faster helicopter route via Simikot and Hilsa is also offered by private operators. All routes ultimately enter the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, where a local Chinese permit is required in addition to Indian travel documents.

Registration & Permits

Government-route pilgrims register through the official MEA portal (kmy.gov.in), typically selected via a lottery/draw process given limited seats each season. A valid passport, medical fitness certificate, and (for recent seasons) PAN card for financial verification are required. Private Nepal-route operators handle Chinese permits directly for their groups.

Best Time to Go

The yatra runs only in a short window each year, typically late May/June through September, when Himalayan passes are clear of heavy snow.

Fitness & Age

This is a high-altitude trek above 4,500-5,600 metres in places; a medical fitness certificate is mandatory, and government routes typically enforce an upper age limit (commonly around 70) for trekking permits.

A Note on Current Status

Yatra routes, border crossings and permit rules have changed repeatedly in recent years (including temporary closures and rerouting after infrastructure damage on some Nepal crossings). Always check the official MEA Kailash Manasarovar Yatra portal (kmy.gov.in) or a licensed operator for the current season's confirmed route, dates and requirements before making any plans or payments.
