Folktale & Sacred Story
Local legend links this ground to the Ramayana: during Lord Rama's Ashwamedha Yagya, his sacrificial horse is said to have wandered here and been captured by his twin sons Luv and Kush, who overpowered Hanuman (sent to guard the horse) and tied it to a tree at the spot. Tradition holds that the temple complex grew up around this very location.
Most Revered Practice
Navratri and the accompanying Dussehra period are the temple's most important observance, when the complex is elaborately decorated and devotees throng for continuous worship of Goddess Durga; the associated Langur Mela, in which children dress and are worshipped as langurs in devotion to Hanuman, draws especially large crowds during these ten days.

Temple Speciality
Durgiana Temple stands in the middle of a sacred tank on the model of the Golden Temple, reached by a causeway, with a gold-plated dome and a large ornamental silver entrance gate, the Darshni Deori, that has given it the popular name "Silver Temple." Its architecture consciously echoes the nearby Harmandir Sahib.

Visitors come to see one of the closest architectural parallels to the Golden Temple anywhere in India, combined with an active Durga shrine barely a mile from Harmandir Sahib. It is a natural stop for pilgrims combining a Golden Temple visit with Hindu darshan.
