Known as 'Dwarka of the South', legend holds the idol was installed by Guru (Brihaspati) and Vayu (wind god), giving the town its name; it has been a major Vaishnavite pilgrimage center for centuries.

Renowned for the Gajapooja and its temple elephants, and considered especially auspicious for weddings and first-feeding ceremonies for infants.
