The present temple was built in the 12th century by the Ganga king Anantavarman Chodaganga, one of India's Char Dham sites, famous for its distinctive tradition of wooden deities ceremonially replaced every 12-19 years (Nabakalebara).
World-renowned for the annual Rath Yatra, when the deities are drawn through Puri's streets on massive chariots before crowds of millions.
