Kamakhya Temple

History & Legend

One of the oldest of the 51 Shakti Peethas, the present structure was rebuilt in the 16th century by the Koch king Naranarayana after an earlier temple's destruction; it blends beehive-shaped shikharas typical of Assam's Nilachal style.

Divine Significance

Revered as the site where the yoni of Sati fell, it is a premier center of Tantric worship and hosts the famed Ambubachi Mela each June.

Guwahati city offers hotels across all budgets a short drive from the temple; some dharamshalas operate near the hill.
