History & Legend

One of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the present temple was rebuilt in 1780 by Ahilyabai Holkar after repeated historical destruction, with its golden spires later gifted by Maharaja Ranjit Singh; the surrounding Kashi Vishwanath Corridor was redeveloped in 2021-22.

Divine Significance

Varanasi is considered Shiva's own city, and dying or being cremated here is traditionally believed to grant moksha (liberation) directly.
