Mansa Devi Temple
Folktale & Sacred Story
Per tradition, Mansa was conjured from the mind (mana) of Shiva by the sage Kashyapa and is regarded as the sister of the serpent-king Vasuki, but she grew up as an ordinary girl unaware of her divine origin. She undertook years of intense sadhana to reach Shiva and learn the truth of who she was, and upon this realisation attained her powers as goddess of welfare and wish-fulfilment. In keeping with this legend, devotees today tie a sacred thread to the branches of a tree within the temple complex when making a wish, returning later to untie it once that wish is fulfilled.
Most Revered Practice
The thread-tying ritual at the temple's 'wish tree' is the single most distinctive practice here, tied to Mansa Devi's reputation as a Siddh Peeth believed to grant sincere devotees' desires. The sanctum uniquely houses two forms of the goddess, one with eight arms and another with three heads and five arms; Navratri is the temple's major festival period.

Temple Speciality
The temple crowns Bilwa Parvat on the Shivalik range, overlooking Haridwar and the Ganges, reached either on foot or via the 'Mansa Devi Udankhatola' ropeway. It is one of Haridwar's Panch Tirth and one of three Siddh Peeths in the city, alongside Chandi Devi and Maya Devi temples.

Visitors come both for the wish-fulfilment tradition of tying threads at the sacred tree and for the panoramic views over Haridwar and the Ganges from the hilltop. It pairs naturally with a ropeway visit to the nearby Chandi Devi temple.
