Local legend holds that when Ganesha (disguised as a Brahmin boy) tricked Ravana into setting down the Atmalinga during evening rituals at nearby Gokarna, fragments and coverings associated with the linga were said to have landed at several points along the coast; the cloth or covering said to have fallen at Kanduka Hill here gave the site its name, 'Mrideshwara,' later softened to Murudeshwara.

History & Legend

Temple tradition ties Murudeshwar to the Ramayana-era legend of Shiva's Atmalinga, said to have been won through penance by Ravana and ultimately grounded near this coastal site. The historic shrine here was built with Chalukya and Kadamba-influenced sculpture in the Dravidian style. In more recent decades, the temple complex was extensively redeveloped, including the construction of its towering gopura and the giant Shiva statue, financed by the businessman R. N. Shetty and executed by sculptors led by Shivamogga-based artisan Kashinath over roughly two years.

Divine Significance

Murudeshwar is counted among the coastal Panchakshetras — five sites, along with Gokarna, Sajjeshwar, Dhareshwar and Gunavanteshwar — traditionally linked to fragments of Shiva's sacred Atmalinga, making it an important stop on this regional Shaiva pilgrimage circuit.
