History & Legend

One of the twelve Jyotirlingas and a key Char Dham site, tradition holds Lord Rama himself installed the lingam here; the temple's present form, with the longest corridor of any Hindu temple in India, developed over several centuries under Pandya, Chola and Setupati rulers.

Divine Significance

Uniquely tied to the Ramayana, pilgrims traditionally bathe in 22 sacred wells (theerthams) inside the temple before darshan.
