Folktale & Sacred Story

After defeating Ravana, Rama is said to have gifted his sacred Ranganatha idol to the Lankan prince Vibhishana, who wished to carry it home, but was warned that once set down on earth it could never be moved again. While journeying south along the Kaveri, Vibhishana paused near Srirangam and placed the idol down during a local festival -- and it refused to rise again, having grown fond of the site. When Vibhishana pleaded for the deity to continue the journey with him, Vishnu declined but promised to always face south, toward Lanka, as a boon to his devotee -- which is why the reclining image at Srirangam is oriented facing south to this day.

Most Revered Practice

The temple's grandest observance is the 20-day Vaikunta Ekadasi festival, climaxing when the deity is carried in procession through the Paramapada Vasal (the 'Gate to Heaven'); passing through this gateway on Vaikunta Ekadasi is believed to grant liberation, and it draws crowds of well over a hundred thousand devotees who queue through the night.

Prasadam & Offerings

Daily prasadam distributed at the temple includes venn pongal and tamarind rice, along with thulasi theertham and panchamrit offered to devotees after the poojas.

Temple Speciality

Recognized as the largest functioning Hindu temple complex in the world in continuous worship, the Srirangam complex spans roughly 63 hectares with 81 shrines, 21 towering gopurams and 39 pavilions enclosed within its concentric temple walls, and it holds pride of place as the foremost of the 108 Divya Desams sacred to Vaishnavites.

Revered as 'Bhooloka Vaikuntam' (Vishnu's abode on earth), it is the foremost of the 108 Divya Desams and a supreme centre of Sri Vaishnavism.

Darshan Timings

The temple is generally open from about 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM, with darshan typically available from roughly 6:00 AM-12:00 PM and again from about 3:15 PM-9:00 PM (please confirm exact timings with the temple before visiting, as they vary by season and festival).
