Sometimes counted as the fifth Pancharanga Kshetra in regional tradition, this grand temple's chariot-shaped sanctum and towering gopuram were substantially developed under the Cholas and later Nayak-era patrons.

One of the most visited Vaishnavite shrines in the temple town of Kumbakonam, forming part of the wider Pancharanga and 108 Divya Desam traditions.
