Folktale & Sacred Story

There is no ancient scriptural legend tied to this site -- it is a mid-20th-century community shrine. Its own founding account is well documented: in 1961, a local villager from Singrijan was sharpening his knife on a stone in the nearby Rangapahar Reserve Forest when a liquid-like substance oozed from it. He reportedly dreamed repeatedly that the stone was Lord Shiva appearing to him as a saint. When he told fellow villagers, they, along with priests, examined the stone and concluded it was a Svayambhu (self-manifested) Shiva Lingam, leading the community to build a temple around it that same year.

The temple's most significant occasion is Maha Shivratri, when it draws large crowds of devotees from within Nagaland and beyond, making it the primary annual gathering point for Hindu worship in the state's commercial hub.
