This is a modern community shrine, not a site of ancient legend. What is verifiable is its founding history: the Shiv Mandir at what was then called Shrimantilla (today's Zotlang locality of Aizawl) was established in 1920 under the initiative of Dhansingh Lama, a supervisor under the Lushai Hills Superintendent, and Bir Bahadur Chhetri, a chowkidar at Bara Bazar. It was founded by Gorkha Hindu devotees who settled in the Lushai Hills, and the present temple structure is a modern (circa 1980) construction cared for by Aizawl's local Gorkha community.

Its most significant religious role is as the gathering point for Aizawl's small Hindu community during major festivals such as Shivratri. In a state that is overwhelmingly Christian, the temple functions as the central venue where local Hindus, largely of Gorkha descent, congregate to pray together.
