Built in 1801 as a small shrine, it grew through the 20th century into one of India's wealthiest and most visited temples, largely through devotees' word-of-mouth faith in the deity granting wishes.
The single-stone idol's trunk turns right, a rare form considered especially powerful; the temple is visited by millions including many from India's film industry.
