History & Legend

First among the twelve Jyotirlingas, the temple was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt through history; the present structure was reconstructed in Chalukya style and inaugurated in 1951 under Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's initiative.

Divine Significance

Regarded as eternally self-existent (swayambhu), it symbolizes resilience of faith, standing where the Arabian Sea meets the shore with no landmass between it and Antarctica.
