Folktale & Sacred Story
According to the Sthala Purana, when Vishnu incarnated as Srinivasa and wished to marry the princess Padmavati, he needed funds for the wedding and borrowed a vast sum from Kubera, the treasurer of the gods. The debt was said to be so large that it could only be repaid over the entire span of the Kali Yuga. Devotees who place offerings in the temple's hundi are traditionally understood to be helping repay this cosmic loan on the Lord's behalf, which is one reason cash and valuables offered here are considered especially meritorious.
Most Revered Practice
The most iconic practice at Tirumala is tonsuring (mundan), where devotees shave their hair as an offering in fulfillment of a vow -- for success, health, childbirth, or gratitude for a wish granted -- a custom popularly linked to the legend of Neela Devi, who is said to have offered her own hair to the deity after his was accidentally damaged.
Prasadam & Offerings
The temple's signature prasadam is the Tirumala Laddu, a sweet prepared in the temple's Potu (kitchen) and distributed to virtually every devotee after darshan; it has been granted a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in recognition of its unique recipe and origin.
Temple Speciality
Venkateswara Temple is widely cited as one of the richest and most-visited pilgrimage sites in the world by daily footfall and donations, set atop the Tirumala hills in Dravidian architectural style. Its sanctum sanctorum is capped by the Ananda Nilayam vimana, a gold-plated tower over the shrine, and worship has followed the Vaikhanasa Agama tradition for centuries.

Devotees travel here for darshan of the swayambhu (self-manifested) image of Venkateswara, believed to be extraordinarily wish-fulfilling, and to take part in rituals such as tonsuring and receiving the famed laddu prasadam.

Darshan Timings
The temple typically opens around 2:30 AM for Suprabhatam and stays active into the night, with Sarva Darshan (free darshan) generally available for most of the day and Special Entry Darshan usually running from about 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM (please confirm exact timings with the temple before visiting, as they vary by season and festival).

Nearest airport: Tirupati Airport (~15 km). Nearest railway station: Tirupati Railway Station, well connected to Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru. From Tirupati town, TTD buses and taxis climb the ghat road to Tirumala.

TTD operates a large network of guesthouses (Srinivasam, Vishnu Nivasam and others) plus free/paid choultries; advance online booking is strongly recommended during peak season.
Local Food Nearby
Tirumala and Tirupati offer TTD-run choultries and canteens serving simple South Indian vegetarian meals to pilgrims, alongside numerous local Andhra eateries in Tirupati town below the hill.
