Folktale & Sacred Story
Temple legend holds that Angaraka (Mars) was afflicted with leprosy and came to this spot to perform penance; Shiva appeared to him as Vaidyanathar, the divine physician, and cured him completely, after which Mars is said to have taken up eternal residence here as the temple's planetary deity. Another local tradition recalls that when Muruga's army was wounded fighting the demon Surapadman, Shiva again manifested as the healer Vaitheeswaran to cure their injuries. The temple tank, Siddhamirtham, is believed to contain nectar from this healing tradition, and a holy dip here is popularly said to cure ailments, especially skin disease.
Most Revered Practice
The temple's most distinctive practice is its tradition of medicinal worship: devotees take a ritual dip in the Siddhamirtham tank and dissolve jaggery in its water, believed locally to help cure skin ailments, and offer silver-plated images of afflicted body parts into the temple hundi as a votive prayer for healing. Tonsuring children for the first time here is also a widely followed practice believed to promote healthy growth.
Prasadam & Offerings
The temple's best-known prasadam is Thiruchandu Urundai, a ball of sacred soil from the temple tank rolled with vibhuti (sacred ash), sandal paste and neem, distributed to devotees as a medicinal offering believed to help cure ailments; sandalwood powder mixed with saffron is also given as prasadam.

Vaitheeswaran Koil is unique among the Navagraha temples both as the seat of Angaraka (Mars) and as Tamil Nadu's principal centre for Nadi astrology, the palm-leaf prediction tradition attributed to the sage Agastya. The temple, revered in the 7th-century Tevaram hymns as a Paadal Petra Sthalam, also functions as a folk-medicine pilgrimage site centered on its healing tank and prasadam.
Why Pilgrims Visit
Pilgrims visit specifically to perform remedial poojas for Mangal dosha (Mars affliction) in their horoscopes, and many combine their temple visit with a Nadi astrology reading from the hereditary astrologer families settled around the temple. The temple's healing associations also draw visitors seeking relief from skin conditions and other ailments through its sacred tank and Thiruchandu Urundai prasadam.
